As I am a visual guy in all aspects of life, - I remember faces very well, but names only if printed on paper - it was more than obvious that I was interested in photography from my early teenage years. At about 13 my brother and myself got a pre-war Belgium viewfinder camera with bellows from my favourite aunt. We produced our first B&W photos during the summer holidays in the countryside. After this, a Kodak Retina Automatic II was the next and better camera. Then we switched to SLR-bodies (Edixa and Mamiya). During my stay in Japan as a sailor, I bought my first Nikon F in Kobe, Japan including all useful accessories and lenses (I paid in US $ bank notes out of a paper envelope). Since then, my standard lens was always no less than a 135mm tele. As the quality demands increased, the hobby and equipment for it was complimented by a B&W- and color darkroom outfit later (and became expensive !).
When "color" gradually replaced "B&W" and time to work in the darkroom became limited due to job demands, I almost completely switched to slide film. Mainly because of the high quality of the images projected onto a screen and the possibility to show the pictures to more people at once. So, most of my travelling I enjoyed twice: once "live" and then on the screen at home or in front of a public audience sometimes also.
Remark of 2009: Although film is still available, my digital cameras (K-M A2, Nikons) "forced" me to switch to "digital" entirely. Also the ease to upload digital images to this website, prevented me pursuing to take slide photos anymore. However, sometime I caught myself of buying a B/W-film for special photos with a Leica M3 (which are not being published here ;-)) ).
As one tries to become "immortal" with photos - all subjects an objects are important for me. However, I hate to fiddle around for a particular image by hours - with tripod and filters, etc. I like to capture "live" pictures and do just slight after-shot processing.
Of course, most of the best images have been published by someone in the world already, but I try to keep my own style whenever possible.
Enjoy looking at the selection of my best photos.
